Vassago, the third spirit of the Ars Goetia, is a Prince commanding twenty-six legions. He is known as a “good-natured” demon in the old grimoires.
His Appearance
Unlike most of the demons in Ars Goetia, Vassago’s appearance is not described in any great detail.
From my experience, when I’ve seen visions of him during trance state, he comes as a tall, robed figure in muted greens or light earth tones. He usually has a calm, observant demeanor, and yes that seem to shift in color, depending on the phase of the work.
When appearing in a more symbolic astral form, he can manifest as a falcon or other bird of keen sight, representing his ability to find and reveal what is hidden.
His arrival is also often preceded by a cooling of the air and a subtle brightening of the space, like light breaking through haze.
Vassago Powers and Abilities
His powers are precise, penetrating, and far-reaching. Vassago specializes in uncovering what is hidden, revealing the location of lost or stolen items, and foretelling the outcome of events. His influence bridges the gap between divination and practical problem-solving, making him invaluable to the magician who seeks both foresight and resolution.
In my own work, I have called upon Vassago when clarity was obscured, when a matter was clouded by deception, confusion, or simply distance in time and space. He works with a calm, deliberate presence, unlike the fiery immediacy of some spirits.
His answers tend to arrive as clear impressions, sudden recollections, or the uncovering of information from unexpected channels. In more aggressive operations, Vassago can strip away an opponent’s concealments, exposing their intentions and vulnerabilities.
Planet, Metal, and Element
Vassago’s planetary association is with Venus, though he has a secondary Mercury current when working in matters of knowledge and investigation. Venus grants him the ability to align circumstances harmoniously so that truth emerges naturally, while Mercury governs the swift conveyance of information.
His metal is copper (Venus), useful in drawing out hidden patterns, and his element is Air, representing the invisible currents through which information (including secrets) travels.
Astrological Considerations
I find Vassago most responsive when Venus is well-aspected, especially in Libra (balanced judgment) or Taurus (steadiness and material clarity).
If the work is investigative or time-sensitive, adding a Mercury hour on a Wednesday sharpens the focus. Venus-Mercury aspects, particularly sextiles and trines, are prime moments to call him for rapid revelations without chaotic fallout.
Offerings and Presentation
Copper coins, a small green or rose quartz stone, and sweet wine are traditional offerings to Vassago. A light green candle placed alongside a white candle symbolizes the harmony and clarity he brings.
Burning rose petals with frankincense during his summoning also seems to open the current more quickly.
Attuning to Vassago’s Energy
For light attunement, prepare a small copper dish or coin and place it on his sigil. Light a green candle to your left and a white candle to your right. Burn a mild incense such as sandalwood with a touch of rose.
Gaze at the sigil and chant his enn: “Keyan vefa jedan tasa Vassago” until your mind grows still and impressions begin to arise. You can hear the pronunciation in this article:
Often, you will sense a coolness in the air or a feeling of watchfulness, as if a patient observer has entered the space. In this state, ask a small question and see if an answer surfaces in thought or imagery.
Ritual of the Unveiled Path – Summoning Vassago for Revelation
This ceremonial operation calls Vassago to uncover hidden truths, reveal the location of missing objects, or bring forward concealed knowledge about a person or situation. It uses a combination of scrying, pendulum work, and directional channeling to draw out answers.
Preparatory Phase
On the day of the rite, avoid idle speculation or gossip; keep the mind in a state of disciplined curiosity. Purify with a bath infused with salt, crushed rose petals, and a small piece of copper placed in the water for the duration.
As you wash, cup the water in your hands and let it pour over your head three times, visualizing a veil lifting from your mind.
Temple and Altar Arrangement
Face East. Cover the altar with a green cloth edged in white. At the center, place Vassago’s sigil drawn in green ink. Behind it, set a scrying mirror angled slightly upward.
To the left, a green candle; to the right, a white candle. In front of the sigil, place a copper coin, a small pendulum, and a shallow bowl of water. Burn a mix of frankincense and rose petals.
Mark your circle in chalk or cord, placing a feather at the East (Air), a small piece of quartz at the South (Fire), a dish of salt at the North (Earth), and the water bowl at the West (Water).
Opening Actions
- Enter the circle from the East, carrying the copper coin in your left hand.
- Walk the perimeter clockwise once, tapping the coin gently against your athame at each quarter, as if “unlocking” each gate of perception.
- Return to the altar, place the coin on the sigil, and light the candles in order: green (truth revealed through harmony), white (illumination of the mind).
Invocation
Raise the athame before the scrying mirror and speak:
“Prince Vassago, seeker of that which is hidden, revealer of the lost, I call you forth to guide my sight beyond the veil. Show me the truth that is concealed, the paths obscured, and the outcomes yet to come.”
Begin chanting his enn, “Keyan vefa Vassago”, in a low, steady rhythm, using the athame’s point to trace slow, clockwise spirals over the scrying mirror. With each spiral, see the mirror’s surface deepen into a pool of still, reflective water.
Revelation Work
When you feel his presence, often signaled by a cooling in the room or a sharpening of your thoughts, place both hands on the pendulum, holding it above the bowl of water.
Ask your question aloud once, then allow the pendulum to move freely. Make note of the motion, then shift your gaze to the scrying mirror, allowing impressions, images, or symbolic scenes to emerge.
If seeking a lost item, visualize it clearly in your mind and see a thin thread of light extending from it back to you. Ask Vassago to show you the location, and follow the scenes or sensations that arise.
Sealing the Insight
When the revelations have ceased, lift the copper coin and hold it between your palms at your heart. Say:
“Vassago, I fix this truth within me and carry it into the world. I thank you for your guidance and your clarity.”
Pass the coin through the incense smoke three times, then wrap it in green cloth for safekeeping.
License to Depart
Thank Vassago and give license to depart:
“Prince Vassago, I release you to your place, with gratitude for the light you have shed. Go in peace, yet remain in influence where you are needed.”
Extinguish the candles in reverse order, walking the circle counterclockwise once to ground the space.
Synergy with Other Spirits
Vassago’s clear-sight current blends well with:
- Ose – to reveal the truth and then shape its presentation.
- Forneus – to manage the reception of the revealed truth by others.
- Marbas – to diagnose hidden causes in matters of physical vitality.
- Vine – to uncover magical workings or curses and identify their source.
Note: This is by no means the only Vassago ritual available, but it’s simple and safe enough for me to share publicly. I use more elaborate items, magic circles, triangles and ceremonial magic skills when conducting rituals for myself and for my clients. You can order yours via my request a ritual service. I will perform your ritual with great care, aligning it with your personal needs which we’ll discuss via email before the ceremony. See you on the other side!
