Ose, the fifty-seventh spirit of the Ars Goetia, is a President commanding thirty legions. His powers are among the more subtle and dangerous in the grimoires:
He can cause a person to believe themselves to be someone else, disguise the identity of individuals in the eyes of others, and answer questions about divine and cosmic matters with great accuracy.
Why Work With Ose
In my own workings, I have called Ose when a situation demanded strategic deception, misdirection, or a reframing of perception, whether to conceal my own moves, protect myself in hostile circles or cause another’s self-assurance to fracture.
Ose is also a profound source of insight in occult philosophy. While his reputation in the Lemegeton emphasizes trickery and mental confusion, he is equally capable of clarifying the most complex metaphysical questions when approached with sincerity and precision.
His dual nature can be summarized as: “Clarity for the summoner, confusion for the target.” This makes him a versatile ally in matters of psychological influence.
Planet, Metal, and Element
Ose’s planetary alignment is with Mercury, ruler of intellect, communication, and cunning, but he bears a noticeable martial edge, making Tuesday (Mars) and Wednesday (Mercury) most opportune days for his rites, depending on intent.
For metal, mercury is his primary correspondence, though silver is an appropriate ritual substitute. His element is Air, befitting his power over thought, perception, and the transmission of ideas, regardless of whether truthful or false.
Astrological Considerations
Ose is most strongly associated with Gemini, the mutable air sign of adaptability and duality, with a secondary link to Scorpio for its powers of secrecy, transformation, and the strategic use of information.
Mercury in Gemini is ideal for Ose’s truth-revealing aspects; Mars or Mercury in Scorpio favors his works of deception and protective obscuration.
Offerings and Presentation
Ose responds well to offerings that acknowledge his dual nature. For clarity and truth-seeking, you can present him on an altar with a clean silver mirror, polished until flawless.
For deception and misdirection, offer a black mirror or a darkened crystal sphere. Candles in yellow (Mercury) and black (concealment) work well together.
Another symbolic ceremonial offering is to pour wine or strong black tea into a chalice as a sign of respect, in three slow, deliberate motions whilst repeating his enn.
Attuning to Ose’s Energy
To attune to Ose without a full summoning, set up a small altar with a yellow candle to the left, a black candle to the right, and a small hand mirror at the center with his sigil beneath it.
Burn a blend of storax and sandalwood, then gaze into the mirror while chanting his enn: “Ayer serpente Ose”.
Visualize the surface of the mirror rippling like water and your reflection subtly shifting, not into anyone specific, but into an unfamiliar yet confident face. This sensation marks the alignment with Ose’s current: adaptability of self-image and the ability to shape perception.
Ritual of the Shifting Mask – Grand Ose Invocation for Strategic Influence and Perception Control
This Ose ritual calls him to shape perceptions in your favor, cloak your identity from unwanted scrutiny, or subtly destabilize the certainty of another’s self-image. It is an active working, combining invocation, mirror scrying, and directional channeling.
Preparatory Phase
On the day of the ritual, limit unnecessary speech and keep your thoughts guarded, as if already under a vow of magical silence. Purify with a ritual bath in which black salt and bay leaves have been steeped, visualizing the water sealing away any unwanted influences on your mind.
Temple and Altar Arrangement

Face the altar to the East. Cover it with a cloth split diagonally, one half yellow, one half black. This symbolizes both truth and concealment. Place at the center a black scrying mirror angled slightly toward you, with Ose’s sigil drawn in silver ink beneath it.
To the left, place a yellow candle; to the right, a black candle. Position your athame before the mirror and a small silver hand mirror beside it. Burn storax mixed with a pinch of clove for focus and to subtly raise the active influence of Mars.
Around the working space, mark the circle in chalk or salt. At the quarter points, place small feathers, symbolizing control over the element of Air and the thought currents it governs.
Opening Actions
- Enter the circle from the East, carrying the silver hand mirror in your left hand.
- Walk the perimeter clockwise three times, holding the mirror up so that it catches the light of the candles, silently visualizing it building a reflective barrier around you.
- Return to the East and place the mirror down on the altar.
Invocation and Mirror Alignment
Light the yellow candle, saying: “For clarity in my own sight.”
Light the black candle, saying: “For concealment in the sight of others.”
Stand before the altar, raise the athame, and trace Ose’s sigil in the air above the scrying mirror. As you do, chant his enn: “Ayer serpente Ose” in a steady rhythm, stepping forward slightly with each repetition until you are close enough for your breath to mist the mirror’s surface.
Channeling Sequence – The Masking
With your left hand on the silver mirror and your right hand holding the athame pointed at the scrying mirror, visualize your own face within the black glass.
See it slowly shift, the hair, the eyes, the features, until it becomes someone else entirely. Feel this form wrapping around you like a second skin.
If the working is to influence another’s perception of you, visualize their face appearing in the black mirror, and see the version of yourself you wish them to perceive.
If the goal is to cause doubt in their own self-image, see their reflection warping, subtly altered, until uncertainty clouds their eyes.
The Breath of Influence
Take three deep breaths, each time exhaling toward the scrying mirror while imagining the altered image flowing from it into the target’s mind or into the surrounding world.
Then, with the athame, make three small clockwise circles over the mirror to “lock” the change into the current of thought.
Sealing the Current
Place the silver hand mirror over Ose’s sigil. With both hands upon it, say:
“Ose, master of the shifting mask, seal this vision into being and let perception bend to my will.”
Pass the mirror through the incense smoke in a sideways figure-eight pattern, then return it to the altar for the remainder of the rite.
License to Depart
Thank Ose formally:
“President Ose, I thank you for your guidance and craft. Depart in peace to your place, yet remain in influence where I have sent you.”
Extinguish the candles in reverse order and walk the circle counterclockwise, feeling the barrier dissolve but the working remain active in the world.
Synergy with Other Spirits
Ose’s current is versatile and often gains strength when woven together with the influence of other Goetic spirits.
- Dantalion – To deepen emotional and psychological influence alongside Ose’s manipulation of perception.
- Forneus – To shape public opinion and mass perception in your favor once Ose’s masking work is done.
- Andras – When the goal is to sow discord or suspicion as part of a broader deception strategy.
When combined carefully, Ose’s precision over thought and self-image can become the subtle keystone in a multi-demon stack, ensuring that others see only what you wish them to see.
