Have you ever wanted to completely transform certain aspects of your life? Maybe you wanted to switch career paths, end a toxic relationship, get your finances in order, lose 50 pounds, work on your mental health, go back to school, or break free from a bad habit or addiction.
But for whatever reason, you not only found it difficult to make the necessary changes to transform, but you also found that you lacked the motivation needed to do so.
Some of the most commonly googled queries on the topic of transformation are as follows:

In a world where instant gratification is available at our fingertips, most people want quick transformation. Anything that takes work and time is undesirable and often not considered an option.
In this post, we will examine what the Bible says about transformation, how God wants us to transform, and how we truly can transform in any area of our lives.

What is Transformation?
Transformation is defined as a dramatic change in the form, appearance, or character of someone or something.
Transformation can be intentional, while sometimes it can be subtle and even go unnoticed or unwanted.
Some forms of transformation happen quickly, while others take a significant amount of time. For example, I can transform my outward appearance overnight with a dramatic haircut, makeup, and a new clothing style. However, developing a consistent healthy diet and exercise routine that helps me lose 30 pounds could take months.
Some transformations can result in improvement and be beneficial. Other times, it can put us at a disadvantage or make things worse.
Different factors motivate people toward transformation. Some are motivated by internal factors like personal beliefs or goals. Others are motivated by external factors like pressure from family and friends or cultural influence. Some are motivated by pain and suffering or major life events. Others are motivated to transform based on inspiration, learning new information, or the availability of new opportunities.
Lastly, how people transform can also vary from person to person. Some common contributors include setting goals, embracing challenges, developing new habits, learning new skills, letting go of the past, cultivating positive relationships, practicing gratitude, self-reflection, modeling others, working with accountability partners, and therapy.
It is good to understand transformation in general and the varying factors involved in its process. However, as Christians, just like with any other topic, it is most important to understand what the Bible teaches about transformation. So, the question is, how does God want us to transform?
What Does the Bible Say About Transformation?
As followers of Christ, we are called not only to believe in Jesus but to be transformed. The Bible teaches four key things about transformation, which, when embraced, can positively affect every aspect of a Christian’s life.
1. God Has a Transformation Plan for Our Lives
We may want to transform our personal lives in several ways, but God has the ultimate transformation plan for us.
From a biblical perspective, the word transformation means a change from a life that no longer conforms to the world’s ways to one that pleases God.
And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. For those whom He foreknew [and loved and chose beforehand], He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son [and ultimately share in His complete sanctification], so that He would be the firstborn [the most beloved and honored] among many believers. And those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified [declared free of the guilt of sin]; and those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity].
Romans 8:28-30 AMP
Because we are sinners by nature due to the fall, God has always planned to restore His children through the blood of Jesus and conform us to the image of Christ—which essentially means to make us like Him, perfectly obeying and honoring God in everything. This conformity is a transformation process that takes time—a lifetime, to be exact.
This transformation happens in three stages for every true believer: salvation, sanctification, and glorification.
In the first stage – salvation, an immediate transformation takes place.
When a person exercises saving faith in Christ Jesus, they immediately pass out of spiritual death and into spiritual life with a new heart imparted. Being justified freely by grace, he/she is accepted and loved before the Father, made one with Christ forever, and receives eternal life as a child of God.
Salvation marks us as a part of God’s family and essentially kicks off our new life in Christ!
- Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13 NIV
- Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. But—when God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life. Titus 3:3-7 NLT
- Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 CEV
Salvation equips us with the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ, which empowers the second stage of our transformation: sanctification.
The word “sanctify” means to be set apart as holy for God’s use. Sanctification is the Holy Spirit working within us to conform us to be more and more like Jesus throughout our entire Christian journey. It is our moment-by-moment, day-to-day walk with God, with all of life’s ups and downs.
- I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 NIV
- For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 NIV
- Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13 NIV
One day, in the last stage of our transformation—glorification—we will pass from this present world into eternity. At that time, our transformation will reach its height. We will be without sin and fully conformed to the image of Christ!
- When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:4 ESV
- Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. I John 3:2 NLT
- But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control. Philippians 3:20-21 NLT
From salvation and sanctification to glorification, God does His transformative work in us and through us to faithfully conform us to the image of Christ. That is God’s plan of transformation for our lives. It is a gift and a promise!
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 NLT
Our God is in the transformation business!
2. Transformation Requires the Help of the Holy Spirit
God not only has a transformation plan for our lives but also fully equips us to fulfill it.
We may be able to rely on our own talents, strategies, and resources for some types of personal transformation, but it is ONLY by the power of the Holy Spirit that we can truly transform to become more like Jesus.
- But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NLT
- For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13 NLT
- Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NLT
- For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 1 Timothy 1:7 NIV
Since our entire Christian journey will be a spiritual struggle between our old sinful nature and the Holy Spirit within us, we must learn to live by the guidance of the Holy Spirit daily to see the fruit of the Spirit, namely transformation, in our lives.
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not
inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in
every part of our lives.Galatians 5:16-25 NLT
3. Transformation Requires Us to Renew Our Minds
Although God initiates, sustains, and fulfills our transformation, that does not leave us without responsibility. God has laid out the plan (conformity to Christ) and equipped us with the means to accomplish the plan (the Holy Spirit). But we must learn how to utilize what He has equipped us with.
Sitting back, doing nothing, and just waiting for the Holy Spirit to change us is not how the process works. In fact, how much we get involved and work alongside the Spirit will directly impact the speed of our transformation.
So, what exactly is our responsibility in the transformation process? We are called to renew our minds so that we can learn to live by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2 NIV
The ONLY way we can renew our minds is by reading and learning God’s Word so that it can reshape the way we think and, therefore, the way we live. Take a look at that same verse from the New Living Translation, which makes it even plainer:
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:2 NLT
Notice that the Apostle Paul is not making a suggestion here. It is a divine invitation to step into a reality where our thoughts align with the Word of God, where true transformation occurs, and our lives reflect His glory.
The renewing of our minds isn’t just about adopting a new set of beliefs or reciting verses like a script. It’s about allowing the very sinful essence of who we are to be reshaped by the truth of God’s Word. It’s a process that involves unlearning much of what we have been taught about life, acknowledging the lies we believe, embracing truth, and living by it.
- His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3 NIV
- All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
- Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 NLT
- For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Hebrews 4:12 NLT
Why does this matter? Why should we care about the state of our minds?
Scripture uses the words heart, mind, spirit, and soul interchangeably to denote the same thing. In fact, the original Hebrew word for heart in Scripture is lêb, which means the inner person, the seat of thought and emotion, the conscience, the mind, and our understanding.
Our heart, therefore, is our mind, intellect, conscience, and emotions. It is the center of our feelings, reasoning, and thoughts. Our hearts/minds are who we are at the very core.
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior—one who manipulates]. He says to you, “Eat and
drink,” Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost].Proverbs 23:7 AMP
And our hearts/minds have been sinful since birth:
- When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. Romans 5:12 NLT
- For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. Psalm 51:5 NLT
- The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve. Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT
This is why, as a part of His plan of redemption, God has ALWAYS been after the transformation of our hearts/minds.
ALL transformations (good or bad) start with a renewal of your mind – a changed mindset or way of thinking. By spending time with God in His Word and prayer, we renew our minds and cultivate a deeper understanding of God’s perfect will and purpose for our lives. This enables us to live in accordance with His plan and experience the abundant life He promises.
I guarantee that regardless of how long you have been a Christian, your level of spiritual growth and maturity is directly related to how much time you have spent in God’s Word and prayer.
We DO NOT become more like Christ without regularly renewing our minds. Period!
4. God Can Transform Any Area of Your Life
When we embrace God’s transformation plan for our lives, learn to live by the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and renew our minds daily with God’s Word, there is no area of our lives that God can’t or won’t transform.
The question is, how quickly do you want to transform? What areas of your life need transformative work right now?
Is it your relationships, your attitude, your finances, or your health? Are you struggling with an addiction or lingering bad habits? Are you lacking self-discipline or patience? Or maybe you have trust issues, struggle with constant fear and anxiety, or have problems controlling your anger.
Whatever the case may be, I guarantee that if you search the Scriptures regarding that specific thing while bringing it before the Lord in prayer and asking Him for guidance, wisdom, and resources, God will begin to work.
I used to struggle in the area of finances for a long time. Although my bills were always paid on time, and I didn’t lack anything, I still hadn’t been able to make any headway in getting out of debt or saving. I couldn’t establish a decent emergency fund, save for retirement, save for a personal goal, or make a dent in paying off my debts. There just never seemed to be any wiggle room in my budget.
I remember thinking I was a single mom and would never be debt-free or have substantial savings. I remember just accepting that and never prioritizing trying to remedy the situation because it seemed helpless and impossible.
I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, but this year, I prayed to God and cried out to Him, saying, “I am so sick and tired of being broke, living paycheck to paycheck, and just surviving. Please help me with my finances. Show me what, if anything, I am doing wrong and what I can do to make things better. I want to be able to do more, give more, and honor you more with my money. Please, God, give me some guidance because I honestly feel like I am failing in this area of my life.”
God answered me in two ways. He directed me to spend some time studying everything the bible had to say on the topic of money and to start listening to the Dave Ramsey podcast (a Christian Financial Guru). Today, seven months later, God has COMPLETELY changed my mindset regarding finances. I learned that I had a lot of false beliefs about money that impacted the way I utilized it. I also learned that I was not being as good a steward of money that I thought I was.
As a result, I now budget more efficiently, spend more wisely, have an emergency fund, give more to my local church, and am on track to be debt-free within the next 2-3 years! I’ve accomplished more in the area of finances in the last seven months than I have in the last decade since I got divorced and became a single mom. And it’s all because I realized I needed to invite God into the transformation process of that particular area of my life.
It started with changing how I thought about money to align with what the Word of God teaches about money. From there, God provided the resources and means to start the transformation. And guess what? He can do the same for you!
Remember, it’s NOT about transforming into who we want to be. It’s about transforming to be more like Jesus because that’s who God wants us to be. It’s about surrendering EVERY area of our lives over to Him in a way that honors and pleases Him.
So, take a moment to stop looking for answers from everyone and everything outside of God and instead turn to Him in prayer. Seek His face through His Word, and ask Him to lead and guide your path. He may not answer in the way that you want, but I promise you that when you invite Him in, He will answer in the way that is best for your life.
- Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8 NIV
- You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 NIV
- Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
Whether it’s your relationships, your health, your finances, your mental well-being, or even some past trauma that is still affecting your life, I promise you there is NO area of your life that God cannot and will not transform if you let Him in by renewing your mind through His Word. I dare you to make room for God to do a new thing in your life.
