The Hit List - How I Make Travel Easier

I’m currently in Detroit for a book signing. (If you’re in the area, you can catch me at The Boston Tea Room, Michigan’s finest metaphysical establishment.) If you’ve followed my work for a while, you know I’m an anxious traveler. I no longer use planes – and after my last train experience, that’s out, too. My goal for every journey is stress-free, so there are lots of things I do to keep it as mellow as possible.

Here are my current strategies for traveling with a minimum of fuss:

  1. I have a packing list. This way, I don’t have to think about it too much.
  2. I’m one of those people who pack at the last minute. No matter how much I’ve tried to get an early start, I seem to do better when I have less time. That way, I don’t overthink it. Instead, I stick to that list.
  3. I tossed my giant suitcase last week. After years of using that thing for long trips, I decided it was more trouble than it’s worth. Plus, the handle was starting to tear. A smaller suitcase means it’s less likely I’ll overpack – something I’ve been guilty of in the past.
  4. Snacks are a must. I always travel with a dark chocolate bar, nuts, and my favorite green tea.
  5. Dress for comfort. On my last trip, I made the mistake of wearing old shoes – and paid the price. I didn’t realize they were falling apart until I was hiking around with my sis for hours. I ended up straining my hamstrings and hurting my feet (both have old injuries, so this is not good). This time, I’m wearing minimalist shoes to strengthen my feet – and cozy clothes. I don’t need to be fancy. I need to be healthy, and that means everything must be comfortable, period.
  6. While a good glass of wine is lovely, I drink very little when I travel. I won’t turn down a bit of good Pinot Noir with dinner, but that’s it. It interrupts my sleep, and that is one thing I need.
  7. Speaking of which, I keep all my sleeping aids with me: mouth tape, earplugs, and a meditation app that lulls me to sleep.
  8. I realized I don’t like to work when I travel. It puts too much stress on an already stressful thing. I finish all necessary work duties before I go so I can focus on relaxing. I’ve also stopped doing in-person classes when I’m on tour because it adds too much pressure. The less I do, the more I enjoy my journeys.
  9. Inbox is closed. Unless it’s an email from my publisher, nothing needs to get answered.
  10. Less is more when it comes to social plans. While I love going out for a nice meal, too many obligations on the calendar mean I have no breathing room. It’s essential for me to have alone time, especially after a book signing.

That’s it. Simple, eh? Even so, I’ll probably fine-tune my strategies down the road. After all, what works now may not work in the future. How about you? What are your methods for keeping your travels stress-free? I’m always looking for suggestions.
